Second Homes

Hitching the camper to the family wagon to spend leisurely weekends at the lake, mountains or shore has long been an iconic image, and dream for many Americans. The Federal-Aid Highway Act of 1956, opened this dream up to even more people, and helped spark the growth of second home ownership. According to the National Association of Realtors (NAR), the number of recreational second homes has increased by around 25% since 1989. The pandemic fueled the highest-ever rate increase in demand for second homes during 2020 and 2021 which has cooled somewhat due to higher interest rates and the resumption of more typical market activity. However, demand for second homes remains above 2019 levels and, according to experts, shows no signs of abating.

North Carolina, in particular, stood out during the second-home frenzy due to what we already know - it's a great place to play!

We are lucky enough to have mountains and beaches, all within a reasonable drive from most metropolitan areas. Our temperate climate means that year-round demand for vacation housing will continue to be in demand for the foreseeable future. To meet this trend, Inhabit Real Estate established an office in the High Country in 2020 to serve the needs of buyers and investors who seek cooler summer temperatures, beautiful autumn leaf displays, along with a variety of outdoor activities offered by NC’s Blue Ridge Mountains, including biking, climbing, and snow sports. Our office serves the High Country region, including Beech Mountain, Blowing Rock, Banner Elk, Sugar Mountain, Todd, and the Jeffersons. Inhabit is also a member of the Canopy MLS system, which serves the area south of the high country market and north of Charlotte, such as the areas around Asheville to Burnsville to Black Mountain, giving its agents access to data and available properties across the state of NC. Inhabit’s agents are available to help buyers navigate the mountain market, and purchase recreational second homes, or investment properties.
